CREATION FESTIVAL DEADLINES

COME JOIN US AT CREATION AND BE A PART OF OUR GROUP.

The Creation Festival (June 27-30) is all about changing lives and glorifying our Creator. Throughout the years, many have been changed, restored, and challenged to serve the Lord and to make a difference in this world.

As the nations largest Christian music festival, Creation offers jam packed days filled with the top musical artists, kids activities, worship tent and more.

However, the Creation Festival is about much more than music. Creation is also about honoring the Word of God through our speakers and seminars.

COST: The cost is $130.00 (12+ years) and $50 (6-11 years). This price includes an admission ticket and food for the event.

DEADLINE: The registration deadline for this event at this price is February 5 with a $90.00 deposit. After this date and until March 4th the cost of the event will increase to $140 (12+ years) and $60 (6-11 years).

WEDNESDAY NIGHT AT THE SHIRE: We’re back at it at the Shire this Wednesdaynight from 6:45- 8 pm! Call up your friends and come out for a great night aswe kick into a series this year entitled, “Welcome to the Planet.”

THE HUNT: ThisFriday, January 13 at 7 pm, we’re going to hold another AmazingRace. Last year’s race was a whole lot of fun and this year’s race islooking like another good one. So plan to be with us and let us know thatyou’ll be coming so that we have enough race vehicles ;)

AMAZING RACE: Next Friday, January 13 at 7 pm, we’regoing to hold another Amazing Race. Lastyear’s race was a whole lot of fun and this year’s race is looking like anothergood one. So make sure you put it on your calendar and let us know that you’llbe coming!

December at the Shire

Students and Parents,

Here’s the plans and happenings at the Shire up to Christmas and the end of December:

THIS WEDNESDAY’S MEETING: We’re looking forward to seeing you at the Shire at the regular time of 6:45 pm. Come ready for an enjoyable time catching up with friends, spending time in worship and learning from God’s Word.

THIS FRIDAY NIGHT – GIRL’S NIGHT OUT: Girls! Shannon & Staci are looking forward to hanging out with you for a night out at Staci’s home from 6-9 pm. They’ve got some plans for you that’ll be a lot of fun which will include making cookies, movie watching, hanging out with friends, etc. They do ask that you bring along a snack or drink. They’ll take care of the rest. Let Staci/Shannon know that you’ll be coming!

THIS SATURDAY NIGHT – GUY’S NIGHT OUT: Guys … we’re looking forward to a great night together with you … we’re still working on the details, but it’s going to be a great night and it’ll include dinner and some activity. Plan on being with us from 6 pm to 9 pm or so ;) We’ll get you the details on Wednesday night at the Shire. Let us know at the Shire on Wednesday if you're able to join us. Hope you can.

NEXT WEDNESDAY – CHRISTMAS CAROLING: Next week on Wednesday, December 14^th, the Shire is going to take our singing on the road and head over to the Colonial Park Care Center for about 45 minutes to spread some Christmas cheer to the residents at the facility. We will meet at the regular time of 6:45 pm and return by 8 pm.

CHRISTMAS PARTY: For our last meeting of the year on December 21^st, the Shire is going to hold it’s Christmas Party. The night will be filled with games, snacks, and short devotional. As usual, we’re going to hold a “White Elephant Gift Exchange.” If you would like to participate in that gift exchange, please bring a wrapped gift costing no more than $5.

Lastly, here’s two upcoming things that you need to know about:

MISSION TRIP: We’re still 6 months out, but we’re in need of hearing in the next few weeks about interest in participating in a youth missions trip during the week of June 16-22, 2012. If those dates don’t work for you and you would go if they were a week later please let us know. This will be a great week spent together, growing in Christ, serving those in need, and making a difference. A trip like this could change your life! Let Pastor Derek know of your interest.

SKI RETREAT: Lastly, it’s that time of the year to start thinking about the Ski Retreat that will be held February 3-5. The registration deadline for this event is January 15. For all the details and forms, click here.

Big Mac Ski Attack 2012

Now's the time to start planning to be a part of this! The details are finally here for Winter Slam 2012 and we're really looking forward to this great weekend away!

We'll be talking about this at the Shire over the next month or so, but here's the details, deadlines, and important things that you'll want to know related this retreat.

The Winter Slam will be held February 3-5, 2012 at the Laurelville Mennonite Church Center and will have special speaker, Phil Pranger, and guest musician "Keith Conner."

On Saturday, February 4th we'll head over to Hidden Valley Resort where you can either snow tube, snow board, ski, go the the resort club, or just hang out as a group.

The cost is $85 + the cost of whatever activity you choose.

The registration deadline is Sunday, January 15 when all permission slips will be needed along with a $25 non-refundable deposit (Checks are to be made out to MPYM.)

I’m writing to remind you that wewill not be meeting at the Shire this Wednesday night … I hope and praythat all of you will have a great Thanksgiving with friends and familyremembering God’s faithfulness in our lives. I want to encourage you to lookfor ways that you can be a blessing to others as you get together thisThanksgiving. To help you with ideas of how you can do that, I’m pastingbelow some thoughts on how you can do that from an article that I cameacross. Hope it’s helpful.

NEXT WEDNESDAY –SERVICE PROJECT NIGHT: We willbe meeting at 6:30 pm at theShire on November 30^th. Please be prompt as some students willbe going elsewhere for one of the service projects.

-------------------- Ideas for beinga blessing this Thanksgiving!

Okay, we all know what the holidaywill be like. Lots of food, football on television, odd ancient relatives withmore hair coming out of their ears than on their head, and, between the kissesfrom over-perfumed aunties, lots of boredom. But did you ever think that maybethis holiday YOU could make a difference on the enjoyment meter? We know thatthe tendency is for you to disappear into your own world on your smartphone orportable computer thingy, or just hang with your dopy cousins and be boredtogether. So, these ideas will help make your Thanksgiving the best one you’veever experienced and endear you to your family members.

• Ask older people to tell youstories about their life. What was living on a farm like? What was life likefor you during the war? What was it like to use a pay phone? How was being ateenager in those days different than today? Did you really see the Beatlesplay live? Etc. You might find hidden treasure sitting on your living roomsofa!

• Be the designated photographer.Shoot photos of family members – especially the ones you don’t see often. Geteveryone’s e-mail address and email copies of your photos to everyone.

• Clear the table, do the dishes,take out the trash – but do it intentionally. Recast yourself as the “Busboy” –you’re trying to BLESS the adults, so take the initiative and get thingscleaned up before anyone can even ask to do it. You’ll be amazed at how muchfun you can have doing these kinds of chores with a go-for-it attitude!

• If someone beats you to the Busboyjob, then you choose to be the “Waiter” or “Waitress.” Refill people’s drinks,bring out more appetizers, ask whether anyone needs anything… all the actionsthat good waiter or waitress would do to earn a tip – but you do it to blesseveryone else!

• If people will be watchingfootball, volunteer to make things a little more interesting. Here’s an idea totry: take “bets” on the game (not just win/lose, but maybe point spread, orwill this next play be a run or a pass, etc.) Figure out a way to track the standingsof the participants. The grand winner gets his or her car washed by you!

• Organize some Thanksgiving gamesfor the little kids. The adults will think you’re a hero! Here are some ideas:Pin the Tail on the Turkey, Turkey Trivia (You can find Thanksgiving trivia orquizzes online.) Create a flag-football game with the little kids that you playin the backyard. Play “Marco-Turkey” – it’s like “Marco Polo” that you play ina swimming pool, but you play this in the garage or smaller roped off area. Blindfoldone “Pilgrim” who has to tag the “turkeys” (the other kids who are crawlingaround on all fours.)

When you do some or all these ideas,you’ll transform your Thanksgiving experience. You’ll probably discover thatthe best part of the holiday has nothing to do with feasting, turkey, football,or cranberries. You’ll discover the joy of blessing others, of connecting withfamily, and of making lifetime memories.

GUYS BIBLE STUDY: This Sunday, the Guys Bible Study is starting atRyan’s House in the evening. It’s goingto be a great time as always … if you can make it contact Ryan/Andrew fordetails.

NEXT WEDNESDAY – NIGHT OFSERVICE: NextWednesday is going to be a little bit of a different night at the Shire as someof the group will be heading to the Paxton Home to serve at a game night andothers will be serving in another way that we’ll let you know about when youget here. HERE’S THE PART YOU NEED TOKNOW: WE WILL BE STARTING AT 6:30 PM ANDNEED YOU TO BE HERE AND READY TO GO AT THAT TIME. See you then … come ready toserve!

SERVICE PROJECT: BETHESDAMISSION SOUPLINE: On Tuesday, October 25 from 4-6 pm is another opportunity to serve atthe Soupline. Talk with Derek to findout how you can serve.

PUMPKINFEST: Two Wednesdays from now (10/26)we’ll be holding the PUMPKINFEST from 6to 8 PM. Invite your friends andcome on out for what’s going to be a night full of food, pumpkins, games, andfriends … all we need you to bring is a snack or dessert to share.

GUYSNIGHT RECAP: ThanksRyan for having the guys over to your place this past Saturday night, it was agreat time!

2. BIBLE STUDY: We’ve mentioned about a few differentpossibilities for another Bible Study for those who want to dig deeper into God’sWord … Last week at the end of ourmeeting, an announcement was made about starting up one of these groups thatwould meet on Mondays from 3-4 pm on a weekly basis. We’d like to start this up this comingMonday. If you are interested in being apart of this, please reply to this email or let Derek know on Wednesday nightat the Shire.

3. CORN MAZE: Next Friday, we’re getting a group together tohead out to tackle a corn maze … that’s October 14^th and we’ll meethere at the Shire at 7 pm. If you wantto be a part of this group the cost is $10 and we’ll need you to sign up bynext Wednesday night’s meeting on October 12 so we can work out all thetransportation details.

4. FALL RETREAT: Don’t forget that we’re going to be having thefall retreat on November 11-12. Mark iton your calendars … we’ll be having more details on that for you in the nexttwo weeks!

FOLLOW UP FROM LAST WEEK

Last Wednesday, we were so blessed to have Ben Kreps (a young man who came through the youth ministry here at Devonshire around 19years ago) share his testimony of Christ’s mercy and grace in his life. I pray that you were encouraged through his testimony as he spoke from Ephesians 2:1-8.

This past Sunday, we had a great time with the group that got together for lunch and then headed over to see “Soul Surfer” movie. If you have the chance to get to see the movie sometime, I’d recommend it. Here’s the trailer link for the movie.

THIS WEEK

Wednesday Night: We’re looking forward to seeing everyone Wednesday night as we finish out our few weeks, working through some topics from the book of Proverbs. I want to encourage you to bring along your Bible.

NEXT WEEK

Next week is Holy Week and we will not be meeting on Wednesday night, but would invite you to come out on Thursday night to the Maundy Thursday service that will be held in the sanctuary at 7:30 pm

On Sunday afternoon, April 10, the Shire Youth Ministry (grades 6-12) will be going as a group to see the 2:10 pm showing of SOUL SURFER. SOUL SURFER is the inspiring true story of teen surfer Bethany Hamilton, who lost her arm in a shark attack and courageously overcame all odds to become a champion again, inspiring millions worldwide through the love of her family, her sheer determination, and her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. Cost of the tickets for students is $5 and price for adults is $6.50. Reserve your ticket by getting your money to the church office or the Shire meeting by this coming Wednesday night (4/6). 1. NEW SERIES: This Wednesday we are going to begin a series in which we will focus on the book of Proverbs. No matter what the challenges are that we face, Proverbs is a book where we’ll find wisdom that we all desperately need.

2. **NEW ENDING TIME: Beginning this Wednesday we will end our meetings at 8:00 pm which will allow our meeting to conclude at the same time as our elementary age ministry.

3. THIRTY HOUR FAMINE: This weekend, March 4-5, starting at 7 pm at the church is the 30 HF and it’s going to be a great time spend together learning, and serving. The tendency for each one of us is to think we have God all figured out. But this week is about one simple truth—we don’t. This week we want students to see how the more they come to know God, the more they will realize they’ll never really know Him completely. There is always more of God to know. He’s that big, that mysterious, that amazing. At the close of this series, we hope your student will walk away with the desire to pursue a relationship with God and to know God more every day.

Just wanted to get the dates and deadlines out to you all regarding Creation (June 29-July 2) this summer with the Shire. If you aren't familiar with the festival, click here. Here the details for our group:

1. TONIGHT’S MEETING IS CANCELLED.

2. WINTER SLAM INFO FOR THIS WEEKEND: Click here for important information regarding leaving and returning times, contact numbers, what to bring, etc. Make sure you check this out, and if you have a remaining balance please bring it with you on Friday or drop it off at the church office.

3. CREATION FESTIVAL: Next week is the first deadline for tickets to be ordered for the Creation Festival this summer. The dates for the event are June 6/29-7/2. If you’re not sure what the Creation Festival is you can click here … but here’s our request for feedback … could you let us know if you have interest in going this summer to this event? Also, can you let us know if you have gone in the past and know at this time that you will probably not be attending this summer?

Session Two: Distorted

Many of us have a distorted Godview because we think God’s primary goal is either for us to be good or for us to be happy. While there may be some truth in those statements, if we see those as His primary goals, then we walk through life with remarkable–and self-made–expectations. Then, when those expectations aren’t met, our faith is shattered and destroyed. This week, we want students to see that following God is bigger than our expectations. Following God requires surrendering control.

Session Two Parent Cue: When you think about the things you pray for or about, or the verses you hang on to, or even the way you perceive God, are those all based on your own personal happiness? How would our prayers and likes look different if we were more concerned about surrendering control?

Feedback Needed: Friday Night Activities & Creation

I trust that you’re enjoying the day off from school … here are a few things that I wanted to touch base with you on:

1. GUYS NIGHT & GIRLS NIGHT: This Friday night from 6-10 pm we are holding two activities for students. One for the girls and one for the guys. The guys will be meeting at Ryan Harris’ home and the girls will be meeting at Staci Adams home. Both events will include dinner and some fun activities for everyone to enjoy for the evening. If you plan to come to either of these gatherings please respond to this email and let us know. (If you need directions we can get them to you then- Ryan lives close to Arooga’s on 22 and Staci lives near CD High School.)

No matter who we are, we all have a Godview. And the way we think about God affects how we interact with our world. Many people struggle because they have a negative or distorted view of God. This first week, we took a look at the life of one of Jesus’ closest followers who struggled for the very same reason. In the end, we want to challenge students to begin to see how their view of God shapes the way they live.

Session One Parent Cue: Both of you grab a piece of paper, and take three minutes to write down all the things that come to mind when you hear the word “God.” Both of you be honest, and don’t just write the words that you think you should. There’s no grade for this.

For many of us, it’s just a vague impression formed when we were younger. For some, it’s an image of Someone against whom we have a strong resistance. For others, God is personal and mysterious, offering an adventure to anyone ready to pursue a relationship with Him. While we can never really know everything about God—because He’s that big and that mysterious—the things we can learn about Him shape the way we respond to whatever life brings. That’s why author A.W. Tozer said, "What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”

This Sunday, the middle and senior high school students will begin a new study on Character. This is a combined class that starts weekly at 9 am and will meet across the hall from the Shire. Here's a summary of what this study will focus on:

"The Old Testament is full of amazing stories about remarkable people. From the very beginning, God has been at work in people’s lives, whether kings, prophets, judges or ordinary individuals. By looking at how God worked in their lives, we see God’s character, His love and provision, His judgment and discipline, and His redemptive plan for humanity.

Character reveals how people of the Old Testament encountered God in amazing ways and their lives were drastically changed. In this study your students will be challenged to see how an encounter with God will change their lives forever."

Meet the Band: Relevant Worship isn’t about being hip, funny or famous. Which isn’t to say the 8-person group is without those traits. Singer Chris Lucas' hair can be seen two blocks away, so he's hard to forget. Fellow front man, Anthony Hoisington, is plotting a gig on Mars. Guitarist Matt Poulsen will tell you he looks cool in his wedding photos.

It's just that, if Relevant Worship was in the music business simply to be on posters & lunchboxes, they would probably be called "Relevant Rock" or something clever like "Jesus Jams". But it isn’t in it for those reasons.
The band is called Relevant Worship and, all kidding aside, each member is fully committed to Jesus' command in Matthew: Go. Preach. Teach.

Meet Jason Mitchell: Jason was born and raised down south. He grew up in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina & Kentucky. He graduated from Toccoa Falls College in 2001 with a degree in Youth Ministries. In 2007, he completed his Masters of Divinity from Biblical Theological Seminary.

Jason oversees the Student Ministries @ LCBC (Lives Changed By Christ) Church. He believes deeply that students aren’t the church of the future but are the church of today. He is committed to seeing them live out the life God has called them live as students.

Jason lives in Manheim, PA with his wife Jenny & two kid's, Sienna & Silas. In his spare time you'll find him reading, listening to all things rock & roll, or cheering hard for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Winter Slam 2011 Information

Now's the time to start planning to be a part of this! The details are finally here for Winter Slam 2011. We've had a year off (last year's retreat was cancelled to bad weather), and so we're really looking forward to this great weekend away! (Here's the link to the promo video for last year's event which has all the same stuff going on ... it will give you a feel for the event.)

We'll be talking about this at the Shire over the next month or so, but here's the details, deadlines, and important things that you'll want to know related this retreat.

The Winter Slam will be held February 4-6, 2011 at the Laurelville Mennonite Church Center and will have special speaker, Jason Mitchell, and band "Relevant Worship."

On Saturday, February 5th we'll head over to Hidden Valley Resort where you can either snow tube, snow board, ski, go the the resort club, or just hang out as a group.

The cost is $85 + the cost of whatever activity you choose.

The registration deadline is Thursday, January 13 when all permission slips will be needed along with a $25 non-refundable deposit (Checks are to be made out to MPYM.)

YouthAlpha Update: Here's an update on where we're at with YouthAlpha at the Shire. It's been a good fall discussing these questions and finding out and hopefully growing in what we believe as followers of Christ. We've talked about: "Who is Jesus? Why Did Jesus Die? How Can I Have Faith? Why and How Do I Pray? Why and How Should I Read the Bible? What about the Holy Spirit? How Can I Be Filled with the Holy Spirit? How Does God Guide Us?" and last week, "How Can I Resist Evil?"

We have three more weeks to go and will continue tomorrow night with the question, "Why and How Should I tell Others?" followed by, "Does God Heal Today?" and then the week after having a Wednesday off on November 24th for Thanksgiving we'll finish on December 1 with "What about the Church?"

Thank You: We are so grateful for your support and participation over these ten weeks in serving our teens by providing pieces of the meals that we've been having prior to our meetings at 6:30 pm. Thank you, Staci for doing a great job in coordinating these meals each week and coming early to prepare.

Off for Thanksgiving: As stated above we will not meet on Wednesday, November 24th.

A HELPFUL ARTICLE ON PARENTING: Here’s an article entitled, “What is Success in Parenting?” by counselor and author Paul Tripp that is worth your read.

MUSIC: A question was brought up related to wanting help with becoming aware of what music was out there from a Christian perspective. Here are two links (page 1 & page 2) to at a resource that’s a little dated from February, but maybe it will be helpful in finding artists that might be comparable in style to what you’re looking for. BOOKS: Here are two books that I’d recommend for you to check out:

Age of Opportunity: A Biblical Guide to Parenting Teens (Paul Trip): Recommendation from CPYU: It is one of the best books on Christian parenting that we have found. A counselor by profession, Tripp has combined his insights from years of counseling, his study of Scripture and his personal experience as a parent of teens in a book that won’t leave readers feeling like they’ve failed miserably in their task as parents. Instead, Age of Opportunity is a breath of fresh air.

Get Outta My Face!: How to Reach Angry, Unmotivated Teens with Biblical Counsel (Rick Horne) - Get Outta My Face!, written for Christian parents, teachers, and youth workers, is about reaching angry, unmotivated, disinterested teens with biblical counsel. Such teens confused and insecure - are selfish; they want what they want, right now. They are corrupted by sin and this corruption is the cause of their problem. Despite all their sin problems, they are still made in the image of God, and this is the key to helping them. This book will help with addressing the teen's sin and bringing them to their God-given desires and godly actions. Far from dismissing or sugarcoating sin, this approach opens wide the door to evangelizing the unsaved teen and to helping the Christian teen grow in holiness and wisdom.

Dear Parents,

I pray that all is going well as summer vacations have ended and students are heading back to school. For those of you who are new to the Shire this year, I want to welcome you and your child to the Shire Youth Ministry of Devonshire Church. This ministry is specifically geared toward the middle school and high school student. Our purpose is to see young people grow in their love for God and others by becoming passionate followers of Christ.

I’ve met this past week with our youth leadership team and we are anticipating a great year of ministry and seeing God work in amazing ways in the lives of young people. I’m grateful for the leadership team that God has given us and I know your children will benefit from them.

As the leadership team gets ready for weekly Wednesday night meetings and the fall, here are a few items we want you to know about:

FUSION: Friday, September 10 from 8-10 we will be holding a special gathering for prayer and worship that we hope your whole family will join us for. I’ve included a little handout with a few more details.

FIRST TWO WEEKLY MEETINGS: On September 8 and 15, we will meet for our first two meetings on Wednesday nights from 6:45 – 8:15 p.m. Our weekly meetings consist of fun games, icebreakers, worship, teaching, and small group discussions.

TIME CHANGE—ALPHA COURSE: Beginning on Wednesday, September 22 going through November 3, The Shire is going to be taking a journey through the Alpha Course. For the Alpha Course, we will be starting a little earlier at 6:30 p.m. with dinner. You may be asking, “What is Alpha?” Summed up Alpha is a course that addresses questions such as, “Is there More to Life Than This? Christianity: Boring, Untrue, and Irrelevant? Who is Jesus? How Does God Guide Us? What about the Church?” If you need more information on what Alpha is, please go to our church website and click on Alpha.

As we journey through the Alpha Course as a youth ministry, we will be joining the adult ministry of our church as they work through the material.

ALPHA WEEKEND: As part of the Alpha experience, we are going to be heading out to Camp Hebron for a retreat for an overnight Friday, October 15 to Saturday, October 16. The cost for this weekend is $30 per person. The deadline for signing up for the retreat is September 15^th. Sign up by calling the church office at 717.545.8485. These retreats are often highlights of the year. We look forward to seeing you there!

PARENTS’ LUNCHEON: On Sunday, October 3, we want to invite parents of middle and high school students to stay for lunch on us after the morning service. Our hope is to gather parents for a time of encouragement and equipping. It is our desire to partner and support your efforts in helping your young person grow in their walk with the Lord. More details will be coming on this!

AFTER SCHOOL PARTY: On Friday, November 19^,we will be holding THE AFTER SCHOOL PARTY from 5 pm to 12 am. This is going to a great event with all kinds of fun activities. More details will be coming, but save the date and plan to be a part of this event.

We've had some good times this summer through the different activities and look forward to seeing you at these there are two left ... one of which is next Wednesday...:

1. AMUSEMENT PARK TRIP TO DORNEY PARK (Next Wednesday, August 11) click here and sign up

LEAVING TIME: We will leave the church office at 8:15 a.m.

COST: $35 (We will need your money by Monday Morning, August 9/Make checks payable to Devonshire Church/I hear that if you work at HersheyPark your admission could be free - so check into that to confirm)

As stated last week, the Shire Youth Ministry will be holding it's weekly meeting this week by joining in with the Kidstuf ministry's "End of the Year Picnic." It'll be a good night for all our parents, children, and students to gather together for an evening meal. The time for the for the picnic is 6 pm and the Shire will not hold it's meeting at it's regular time of 6:45 p.m.

We ask that each family brings lawn chairs/blankets for their family to eat on and a food item as described below:

The Creation Festival (June 30-July 3) is all about changing lives and glorifying our Creator. Throughout the years, many have been changed, restored, and challenged to serve the Lord and to make a difference in this world.

As the nation's largest Christian music festival, Creation offers jam packed days filled with the top musical artists, kids activities, worship tent and more.

However, the Creation Festival is about much more than music. Creation is also about honoring the Word of God through our speakers and seminars.

COST: The cost is $125.00 (12+ years) and $50 (6-11 years). This price includes an admission ticket and food for the event.

DEADLINE: The registration deadline for this event at this price is April 25 with a $50.00 deposit . After this date and until June 1st the cost of the event will increase to $135 (12+ years) and $60 (6-11 years).

These past two Wednesday nights, hopefully you've been encouraged as last week we were reminded of God's amazing love for you as we looked at Psalm 139 and read of how we've been "fearfully and wonderfully made" ... and of how much our God thinks and treasures us ...

Tonight, we focused on the amazing truth that God is knocking at your door and wants to have a relationship with you ... the question is, "Will you let him in?" "Will you let him have that seat next to you in all that you do?"

Our prayer at the Shire is that you will ... you'll never regret it ...

Elizabeth Kuch is a Sudanese refugee who spent years in a displacement camp after being separated from her family. Eizabeth traveled thousands of miles on foot at the age of five, first to Ethiopia then to Kenya ... and now she lives here in Harrisburg.

We're going to have a good night ... see you there!

This Week: Movie Night

Hello Students and Parents,

This Wednesday night we're making a change to our plan for the evening. This past weekend, a movie called, To Save a Life, came out in the theaters. You may have heard it advertised on various radio stations. From different reviews and at the recommendation of one of our parents our plan is to have both middle and high school students meet at the church at 7 p.m. and head over to Regal for the 7:30 p.m. showing. The movie is 2 hours long and is rated PG-13 (some drug content, teen drinking, suicide, disturbing images, sexuality and mature thematic elements)

Movie Summary: After the death of a childhood friend, a popular teen (Randy Wayne) risks his own social standing by reaching out to classmates who are usually shunned.

Here are a few things we'd like you to do:

Students and Parents,

Just wanted to give a little update on December at the Shire …. and give a reminder to bring a "white elephant" gift to exchange this Wednesday ..

Last Week: Last week, Duane Hershberger came and spoke with us about the meaning of the Advent season and encouraged us to continue to seek the Lord and know that we can trust him no matter the circumstance. It was great to hear him share with our young people during this season of his life.

This Week: This Wednesday, 12/9, we are going to spend the night making Christmas Cookies in preparation for next Wednesday. Also, as part of the night this week, we are going to hold our annual White Elephant Christmas Gift Exchange (so come this week with a $5 or below gift wrapped to exchange) Should be a good night!

Next Week: Next Wednesday, 12/16, we’re going to take the cookies that we’re making this week and hand them out to members of the congregation as we go around Christmas Caroling at their homes. **This will be our final Wednesday night meeting of 2009 … so don’t miss it!

For the HIGH SCHOOL students … Here’s the deal on what we’re going to be doing at Messiah College: We’re going to be joining in on group games and experiential activities that you’re going to love. These are not just your run-of-the-mill games, but engaging games made even more exciting by the sheer number of people involved [Imagine over 100 teens playing and shouting in a four court gym]. Fun is good in and of itself, however our activities will be designed and facilitated towards Biblical lessons. The evening will include a devotional time and light refreshments.

Bethesda Mission is located in Harrisburg and aims to provide food, shelter, clothing and life-changing counseling based on the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all who seek our help. The way that we will be serving Bethesda tomorrow night is by labeling, collating, and stuffing 1,500 pieces of their quarterly newsletter. That’s a good size task … so the more people that we have to help the better …

**Students bring out your friends … and we’d like to encourage parents to stay and serve alongside their young people for the service project.

Please arrive by 6:45 p.m. … if you can make it out by 6:30 p.m. we’ll have plenty for you to start at that time also!

Getting Started in Philemon

Paul is thankful for some stuff in Philemon’s life:

His love and faith (loyalty) for Jesus Christ and others.
His sharing of his faith.
People have been refreshed through him.

Some Questions to Consider:

Does your faith stick out to others? What are people saying about you? Are people talking about your love and faith?
Are you living your faith out … or is it just something that’s in your head … you won’t “know the full knowledge of every good thing” unless you live it out.
Who do you know who encourages you in the Lord? Are your refreshing to others? (a drink in the midst of a run is refreshing)

This Sunday It Starts

The Shire is kicking into the use of a new curriculum during the Sunday School class time for both our middle and high school class. What is starting this Sunday is a curriculum plan purposed with taking students through God's Word. If you'd like to get more details on the plan click here ... but here's the gist ... over 6 years, a student will be taken through the entire Bible in 3 years and then over another 3 years teens will focus on Biblical subjects that teens need to know.

Here's the deal teens: You know change - fashion, technology, and entertainment ... But God says His Word will last forever. We want you to know you Scriptures ... not only will God's Word last forever, but it is POWERFUL! (Is. 55:10-11)

PARENTS: We want to encourage you to bring your young people and involve them in these classes ... as part of our way to involve you in this plan each week, you'll recieve a family devotional that will help you have an idea of what your student is learning, and also a little devotional that you can use to have your own discussion with them that will help towards getting them thinking about what they will be learning on the upcoming Sunday.

Way to Sing

Hey Shire Folks,

Way to sing last night! … your voices nicely filled the room with a beautiful sound, it was great to see everyone ready to sing to our God and about our love for our Savior … the One who is “mighty to save”! Thanks Andrew and Joey for playing!

Here’s some pics from the high school’s trust falling … but most importantly, I want to encourage everyone to keep digging into God’s Word and applying it to your life … it’s so worth it … Remember: “… He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:6)

Next week, we’re looking forward to seeing you at the Daubert’s for the Bonfire at 6 p.m.! 1250 Bottles

Nice job serving to all the students and leaders who helped out last night at Morning Star!

Here's what we accomplished: some vacuuming, sorting and organizing clothes, sorting through toys, and preparing 1,250 baby bottles for their fundraising project called, "Baby Bottle Blessing." Way to go guys!

Through It All

Some times we wondering why we face hardship in life. These hardships can be physical, emotional, circumstantial, relational, spiritual, or maybe even financial ... but here's the encouraging thing ... in Romans 8:28, Paul says, "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." Life can be real hard, but be encouraged and know that God is working things for the good. Through it all ... keep trusting him.

If you couldn't make it to the Shire tonight, here's the little interview we showed of Nick Vujicic and Bethany Hamilton. It's encouraging to see these to using there lives to spread the name of Jesus. He's got a plan for all of us ... may we be faithful.

Where We're Headed

It was great to see everyone out at the Shire last night! We had a great time socializing, worshipping and digging into God's Word for encouragement and direction. If you weren’t able to make it out, here’s what we talked about and where we're headed with our discussions at the Shire.

Especially this month, but in one way or another throughout all we talk about this year, we're going to be focusing on the issue of "trust." Trust is foundational to any relationship - whether we're talking about our human relationships or our relationship with God.

Proverbs 3:5, 6 says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart ..." Many of us can quote this verse, but, honestly, there are times when it's not all that easy of a thing to do ... think for a moment of the world that we’re living in ... many of us (and all of us will) are seeing and experiencing a great deal of hard stuff that could make it easy to think that it's not worth trusting anyone and maybe even God.

Pray that yourself and all of us will grow in our love for the Savior and know that he is trustworthy. He is with us through it all. Really, isn't that what it all comes down to in our relationship with God ... Our Savior asks us to just keep on trusting him more and more as He leads us.

We're looking forward to seeing God work in our midst and around us this year!
